Grateful Dead a fost o trupă americană de muzică rock fondată în 1965 în Palo Alto, California, cunoscută pentru stilul său eclectic care îmbina elemente de rock, blues, folk, country, bluegrass, jazz și psychedelia. Trupa a devenit celebră pentru improvizațiile prelungite din concerte și pentru baza de fani dedicați, cunoscuți sub numele de Deadheads.
American Beauty, al cincilea album de studio al trupei, a fost lansat în noiembrie 1970 la casa de discuri Warner Bros. Records și a continuat stilul folk-rock și country al albumului anterior Workingman's Dead. Albumul conține 33 de piese pe trei CD-uri, inclusiv clasice precum Box of Rain, Friend of the Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Ripple și Truckin'. Majoritatea textelor au fost scrise de Robert Hunter. În 2003, revista Rolling Stone a plasat albumul pe poziția 258 în topul celor 500 de albume ale tuturor timpurilor.
În 1970, trupa era formată din Ron „Pigpen” McKernan, Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Tom Constanten, Bruce Hornsby, Robert Hunter și Rob Wasserman.
