Joni Mitchell este o cantautoare, multi-instrumentistă și pictoriță canadiană, considerată una dintre cele mai influente artiste ale generației sale. Cariera sa a început în anii șaizeci în scena folk, ulterior îmbinând în opera sa elemente de folk, rock, pop și jazz. A câștigat unsprezece premii Grammy și a fost introdusă în Rock and Roll Hall of Fame în 1997.
Albumul Shadows And Light a apărut inițial în 1980 ca înregistrare live din turneul din Santa Barbara County Bowl din septembrie 1979. Această ediție extinsă din 2024 oferă înregistrarea remasterizată a concertului pe șase discuri de vinil, surprinzând-o pe Mitchell într-o perioadă în care creația sa era puternic influențată de jazz. Pe album se regăsesc piese precum Coyote, Amelia, Free Man in Paris sau Woodstock, completate de intervenții solo ale muzicienilor acompaniatori.
În turneu, Mitchell a fost însoțită de o formație de jazz în care activa basistul Jaco Pastorius și alți muzicieni renumiți ai scenei de jazz de atunci, care au transformat compozițiile ei în aranjamente jazz ample.
