Saxon se numără printre formațiile cheie ale New Wave of British Heavy Metal, mișcare a heavy metalului britanic care a influențat fundamental dezvoltarea genului în anii optzeci. Trupa din South Yorkshire și-a câștigat respectul atât în rândul fanilor, cât și al generațiilor mai tinere de formații metal.
Al treilea album de studio, Strong Arm of the Law, a apărut în octombrie 1980 la casa de discuri BMG, la numai șapte luni după predecesorul de succes Wheels of Steel. Discul a debutat pe locul 11 în clasamentul britanic și a continuat sunetul puternic al albumului precedent – simbolic, începe chiar cu piesa Heavy Metal Thunder (cu explozie și tunet), în timp ce Wheels of Steel se încheia cu o explozie. Albumul a fost înregistrat în același studio Ramport cu producătorul Peter Hinton și conține 16 piese, inclusiv remixuri și versiuni rare. Printre cele mai puternice piese se numără Heavy Metal Thunder, Dallas 1PM și titulara Strong Arm of the Law.
La momentul lansării, trupa era formată din Biff Byford (vocal), Graham Oliver și Paul Quinn (chitare), Steve Dawson (chitară bas) și Pete Gill (tobe).
