Albumul Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not a apărut în ianuarie 2006 la casa de discuri Domino și a devenit cel mai rapid vândut album de debut din istoria Regatului Unit — în prima săptămână s-au vândut 360 000 de exemplare. Albumul a câștigat Mercury Prize și a obținut certificarea de cinci ori platină în UK. Single-urile I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor și When the Sun Goes Down au ocupat primul loc în topul britanic.
