The Communards a fost un duo synthpop britanic, format în 1985 de vocalistul Jimmy Somerville (cunoscut anterior de la Bronski Beat pentru falsetto-ul său caracteristic) și pianistul și multiinstrumentalistul Richard Coles. Ambii și-au împărtășit deschis experiențele și au abordat teme sociale în muzica lor.
Albumul Red a fost lansat pe 5 octombrie 1987 la casa de discuri London Records, fiind a doua și ultima înregistrare de studio a duoului. În Marea Britanie a ajuns pe locul 4 în clasamente și a primit certificare de platină. Conține în total 32 de piese pe două discuri compacte, printre care se remarcă o versiune energică a piesei Never Can Say Goodbye (hit-ul lui Harold Melvin), precum și Tomorrow, There's More to Love Than Boy Meets Girl ori For a Friend. Pe lângă versiunile originale ale compozițiilor, setul include remixuri extinse și înregistrări live.
La realizarea albumului au contribuit Richard Coles și Jimmy Somerville.
