Death a fost o formație americană de death metal înființată în 1983, considerată o pionieră a genului și una dintre cele mai influente trupe de death metal din istorie. Sub conducerea lui Chuck Schuldiner, numit „părintele death metalului”, formația a evoluat de la death metalul brut al începuturilor către un progressive death metal tehnic avansat.
Albumul The Sound of Perseverance a fost lansat pe 31 august 1998 la casa de discuri Nuclear Blast ca al șaptelea și ultimul album de studio al trupei. Este un dublu CD cu 19 piese, cuprinzând atât versiunile finale ale pieselor, cât și versiuni demo din 1997–1998. Este considerat una dintre cele mai reușite producții din discografia Death și a fost numit unul dintre cele mai mari albume de heavy metal din toate timpurile. Printre piesele remarcabile se numără Scavenger of Human Sorrow, Spirit Crusher și instrumentalul Voice of the Soul.
Pe album au colaborat Chuck Schuldiner (voce, chitară), Shannon Hamm (chitară), Scott Clendenin (chitară bas) și Richard Christy (tobe). După decesul lui Schuldiner în 2001, formația s-a destrămat.
