În spatele cvartetului virtual Gorillaz se află vocalistul Damon Albarn de la trupa Blur și ilustratorul de benzi desenate Jamie Hewlett. Trupa a fost fondată în 1998 și îmbină rock-ul alternativ cu hip-hop, muzica electronică și pop.
Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez a fost lansat pe 23 octombrie 2020 prin casa de discuri Parlophone, ca al șaptelea album de studio al grupului. Înregistrarea conține 17 piese pe care Gorillaz le-au publicat treptat pe parcursul anului ca episoade ale proiectului web Song Machine. Pe album apar ca invitați Robert Smith de la The Cure, Elton John, regretatul toboșar Tony Allen, rapperii britanici Skepta, Kano și slowthai, precum și duo-ul punk Slaves. Acest CD pe un singur disc conține toate piesele care au apărut și în versiunea extinsă pe dublu vinil.
În 2020, formația era alcătuită din personajele animate 2D (voce, clape, melodică), Murdoc Niccals (chitară bas, tobe electronice), Noodle (voci de acompaniament, chitară, clape) și Russel Hobbs (tobe, percuție).
