Grateful Dead a fost o trupă americană de muzică rock cunoscută pentru stilul său eclectic, care îmbina elemente de rock, folk, blues, jazz, country și psychedelia. Trupa a devenit celebră pentru improvizațiile din timpul concertelor live și pentru baza devotată de fani cunoscută sub numele de „Deadheads”.
Albumul Grateful Dead a fost lansat pe 24 septembrie 1971 la casa de discuri Warner Bros. Records ca al doilea lor album live pe dublu vinil. Deși a fost publicat fără titlu, este cunoscut în general sub numele „Skull and Roses”. A devenit primul album al trupei certificat cu disc de aur de către RIAA și a rămas cel mai bine vândut album al lor până la apariția compilației Skeletons from the Closet. Această ediție aniversară oferă 11 piese înregistrate live în New York și San Francisco, remasterizate pe vinil de 180 de grame, printre care Bertha, Playing in the Band sau The Other One de optsprezece minute.
La momentul lansării albumului, formația Grateful Dead era alcătuită din Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart și Ron „Pigpen” McKernan.
