Jethro Tull este o formație britanică de rock a cărei muzică, de la începuturi, combină elemente de blues, folk, rock progresiv și muzică clasică. Este caracterizată de stilul vocal inconfundabil și rolul distinctiv al flautului interpretat de frontmanul Ian Anderson.
Albumul The Broadsword and the Beast a fost lansat în aprilie 1982 de casa de discuri Chrysalis pe vinil. Este al paisprezecelea album de studio al formației, care îmbină stilul folk al decadei anterioare cu sunetul dominant al sintetizatorului din anii '80 – instrumentele acustice sunt completate de peisaje sonore electronice. Înregistrarea conține zece piese, dintre care cele mai remarcabile sunt Beastie, Broadsword și Fallen on Hard Times. Albumul a fost înregistrat în iarna anului 1981, iar pentru prima dată în istoria trupei producția a fost realizată de un producător extern, Paul Samwell-Smith.
La momentul lansării albumului, Jethro Tull era formată din Ian Anderson (chitară acustică, flaut, armonică, voce, mandolină), Martin Barre (chitară acustică și electrică, fluier dulce), Dave Pegg (chitară bas, mandolină), Gerry Conway (tobe), Peter-John Vettese (instrumente cu claviatură), Paul Burgess (tobe), Scott Hammond și Tony Williams (chitară bas).
