Marillion este o trupă britanică de muzică rock fondată în 1979 la Aylesbury, a cărei muzică îmbină elemente de post-punk și rock progresiv clasic. În anii optzeci, a devenit cea mai de succes formație neo-prog din punct de vedere comercial.
Albumul Clutching at Straws a apărut pe 22 iunie 1987 la casa de discuri Sanctuary Records, fiind al doilea album conceptual al trupei. Povestea îl urmărește pe scriitorul Torch, care cade treptat pradă alcoolismului și se confruntă cu viața sa. În același timp, este ultima placă de studio pe care o înregistrează frontman-ul original Fish — acesta a părăsit trupa anul următor. Printre cele 23 de piese se numără Incommunicado, Warm Wet Circles, Sugar Mice, precum și versiuni alternative și demo-uri care surprind ultimele înregistrări ale trupei cu Fish. Deși albumul nu a atins succesul comercial al predecesorului Misplaced Childhood, a petrecut cincisprezece săptămâni în clasamentele britanice.
La înregistrarea albumului a participat o formație de cinci membri: Fish (voce), Steve Rothery (chitară), Mark Kelly (claviature), Pete Trewavas (chitară bas) și Ian Mosley (tobe).
