Metallica este o trupă americană de metal înființată în 1981 la Los Angeles. Se numără printre cele mai de succes formații de metal din lume și printre „cei patru mari” ai thrash metal-ului anilor '80. Trupa a câștigat nouă premii Grammy și a vândut peste 100 de milioane de albume în întreaga lume.
Albumul Metallica, adesea numit The Black Album din cauza copertei complet negre, a fost lansat în august 1991 de casa de discuri Blackened. Este al cincilea album de studio al trupei și totodată cel mai mare succes comercial al lor — în SUA s-au vândut peste 16 milioane de exemplare, iar la nivel mondial peste 30 de milioane. Spre deosebire de albumele anterioare de thrash metal, acesta a adus un sunet mai lent, mai greu și mai accesibil comercial, produs de Bob Rock. Piese de succes precum Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters sau The Unforgiven au devenit hituri radio și rămân printre cele mai difuzate melodii ale formației. Această ediție limitată pe 3 CD-uri conține 39 de piese — albumul original cu douăsprezece melodii, demo-uri, mixaje de probă și versiuni alternative de pe riff tape-uri și înregistrări de studio.
La momentul lansării albumului, Metallica era formată din James Hetfield (voce, chitară), Lars Ulrich (tobe), Kirk Hammett (chitară, backing vocal) și Jason Newsted (chitară bas, backing vocal).
