Metallica se numără printre cele mai de succes trupe de metal din lume și face parte din „Big Four” a thrash metalului anilor '80. Această trupă americană, fondată în 1981, a vândut peste 100 de milioane de albume și a câștigat nouă premii Grammy.
Albumul ReLoad pe 3 CD-uri a apărut în noiembrie 1997 la casa de discuri Blackened. Este al șaptelea album de studio și continuarea albumului Load din 1996. Inițial, Metallica a luat în considerare un album dublu, dar la sfatul producătorului Bob Rock a împărțit materialul în două titluri separate. ReLoad conține 42 de piese, incluzând înregistrările originale și versiuni demo din perioada compunerii lui Load. Albumul a debutat pe locul 1 în SUA (436.000 de exemplare vândute în prima săptămână), iar la nivel mondial s-au vândut peste 9,5 milioane de copii. Printre piesele remarcabile se numără Fuel, The Memory Remains (cu vocea invitată a cântăreței Marianne Faithfull) și The Unforgiven II, continuarea piesei de pe Black Album. Muzical, Metallica s-a situat la granița dintre heavy metal, rock alternativ și influențe blues, atrăgând un public mai larg. Pe album a apărut pentru prima și singura dată în discografia trupei o voce feminină invitată.
Componența era formată din James Hetfield (chitară, voce principală), Lars Ulrich (tobe, percuție), Kirk Hammett (voce de acompaniament, chitară) și Jason Newsted (voce de acompaniament, chitară bas). Pentru Newsted, acesta a fost ultimul album de studio cu Metallica.
