Prince a fost un cântăreț, compozitor, multi-instrumentist și producător muzical american. Creația sa a cuprins o gamă largă de stiluri — funk, soul, R&B, rock, pop, new wave și jazz. A fost pionierul așa-numitului sunet de la Minneapolis și pe majoritatea înregistrărilor sale a interpretat singur toate instrumentele.
Compilația The Very Best of Prince a apărut în 2001 la casa de discuri Warner Bros. Records și conține 17 piese, toate lansate drept single-uri de pe albumele sale de studio între 1979 și 1991. Albumul a atins postum locul întâi în clasamentul american Billboard (mai 2016) și a obținut certificare platină pentru aproximativ 2,9 milioane de exemplare vândute în SUA. Printre piesele prezente se numără hiturile americane numărul unu When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Kiss și Cream, precum și Purple Rain, 1999, Little Red Corvette sau Raspberry Beret.
