The Rolling Stones este o formație rock britanică fondată la Londra în 1962, care se numără printre cele mai influente trupe din era rock. Duetul de compozitori Mick Jagger și Keith Richards a devenit forța creatoare principală a grupului, care în anii '60 a definit sunetul dur, accentuat ritmic, al hard rock-ului de mai târziu.
Albumul The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, publicat de casa de discuri ABKCO în 1996, conține înregistrarea unui program special TV din decembrie 1968, care nu a fost difuzat timp de aproape treizeci de ani. Înregistrarea cu 19 piese oferă nu doar prestația Stones, ci și apariții ale invitaților precum The Who, Jethro Tull sau Marianne Faithfull. Din repertoriul Stones se aud, printre altele, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Sympathy for the Devil și You Can't Always Get What You Want. Proiectul a fost conceput ca o încercare ambițioasă de a crea un show rock în spirit de circ, devenind, după ani, un document cult al anilor '60.
Pe album, The Rolling Stones este prezentă în formula de șase membri, care la momentul înregistrării era compusă din Mick Jagger (voce, chitară, clape), Keith Richards (chitară, voce), Brian Jones (chitară, clape, muzicuță, percuție), Bill Wyman (chitară bas), Charlie Watts (tobe) și Ian Stewart (clape, percuție).
