Nina Simone, pe numele real Eunice Kathleen Waymon, a fost o cântăreață, pianistă și activistă americană pentru drepturile civile. Muzica sa a îmbinat jazzul, bluesul, soulul, gospelul și influențele clasice – în special opera lui J. S. Bach – iar publicul i-a acordat supranumele „High Priestess of Soul”. A studiat la Juilliard School of Music și a visat inițial la o carieră de concertistă la pian; pe scenă și-a găsit însă propria voce și a devenit una dintre cele mai importante interprete ale generației sale.
Compilația 60 Essential Recordings, disponibilă pe trei CD-uri, ilustrează amploarea paletei creative a artistei – de la standardele pianistice și clasicile de jazz (My Baby Just Cares For Me, I Loves You Porgy, Summertime) la înregistrări blues (Gin House Blues, Fine and Mellow) și cântece spirituale legate de mișcarea pentru drepturi civile.
