Duoul american pop-rock Sparks este format din frații Ron Mael (clape) și Russell Mael (voce). Trupa, fondată la Los Angeles în 1969, este cunoscută pentru abordarea plină de umor în compoziție, versurile sofisticate cu referințe literare și prezența scenică teatrală. Stilul lor a evoluat de-a lungul deceniilor — de la glam, la new wave și până la muzică electronică de dans.
Albumul triplu Past Tense: The Best of Sparks a apărut în 2019 la casa de discuri BMG. Selecția celor 58 de piese a fost realizată sub supravegherea personală a ambilor frați și reprezintă o trecere în revistă a întregii cariere Sparks — de la perioada timpurie și colaborarea cu producătorul Giorgio Moroder de la sfârșitul anilor '70 până la înregistrările de pe albumul apreciat Hippopotamus. Printre piesele iconice se numără This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us, The Number One Song in Heaven sau Amateur Hour.
La momentul lansării albumului, formula live de patru membri era completată de Steven Nistor (tobe) și Evan Weiss (voce de acompaniament).
