Frank Zappa a fost un compozitor, chitarist, cântăreț și producător american, unul dintre marii experimentatori din istoria muzicii rock. Lucrările sale au fost caracterizate de nonconformism, improvizație liberă, experimentare sonoră, virtuozitate muzicală și o privire satirică asupra culturii americane. În cariera sa de peste 30 de ani s-a dedicat mai multor genuri muzicale – rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, lucrări orchestrale de muzică clasică modernă și musique concrète. A produs majoritatea din peste 60 de albume pe care le-a lansat solo sau cu trupa sa The Mothers of Invention.
Compilația Zappa Original Motion a apărut pe dublu LP și sintetizează creația lui Zappa de-a lungul deceniilor. Albumul include înregistrări live din cluburi legendare precum Whisky și Roxy, înregistrări de studio de pe albume precum Freak Out!, Chunga's Revenge sau Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, și compoziții orchestrale înregistrate cu London Symphony Orchestra. Printre piesele evidențiate se numără Valley Girl cu fiica sa Moon Zappa, instrumentalul The Black Page #1 sau Watermelon In Easter Hay.
