Formația britanică Jethro Tull a fost fondată în 1967 de muzicianul scoțian Ian Anderson. Ansamblul a devenit celebru prin originalitatea sa, combinând rock progresiv, hard rock și folk cu un rol proeminent al flautului transversal, vocea caracteristică a lui Anderson și compoziții complexe. Jethro Tull s-au inspirat din muzica populară celtică, blues și muzică clasică.
Songs From the Wood a fost lansat la 11 februarie 1977 la casa de discuri Chrysalis și este considerat primul album din trilogia folk-rock a formației de la sfârșitul anilor șaptezeci, urmat de Heavy Horses și Stormwatch. Albumul conține 17 piese, inclusiv versiuni bonus și mixaje alternative — printre cele importante se numără piesa de titlu Songs From the Wood, Jack-in-the-Green, Velvet Green sau extinsul Pibroch (Cap in Hand). Această reeditare din 2017 aduce albumul original remixat de Steven Wilson.
La album au colaborat Ian Anderson (chitară acustică, flaut, armonică, voce, mandolină), Martin Barre (chitare, flaut dulce), John Evan (orgă, pian, sintetizator), Barriemore Barlow (tobe), John Glascock (chitară bas), Dee Palmer (clape, saxofon), Scott Hammond și Tony Williams (bas).
