Trupa americană de rock alternativ R.E.M. din Athens, Georgia, a fost una dintre primele formații din genul său care au pătruns în conștiința publicului larg. După succesul albumului Out of Time (1991), au intrat în studio practic fără pauză pentru a înregistra următorul opus.
Albumul Automatic for the People a fost lansat în octombrie 1992 la casa de discuri Warner Bros. Records și a devenit al optulea album de studio al trupei. Inițial au planificat un sunet mai dur, dar în timpul lucrului au schimbat direcția către piese mai liniștite și introspective care abordează teme despre mortalitate și existență. Conține hituri precum Drive, Everybody Hurts sau Man on the Moon, care rămân și astăzi printre cele mai cunoscute piese ale trupei. La nivel mondial, albumul s-a vândut în aproximativ 15 milioane de exemplare și a atins locul doi în clasamentele americane. Această ediție deluxe aniversară de 25 de ani oferă 79 de înregistrări pe 4 discuri Blu-ray împreună cu un booklet de 60 de pagini și include albumul original remasterizat, înregistrări live și mixaj Dolby Atmos.
La momentul lansării albumului, trupa era formată din vocalistul Michael Stipe, chitaristul Peter Buck, basistul și claviaturistul Mike Mills și toboșarul Bill Berry.
